Charging in a Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 range uses the CCS charging standard, which consists of a combined AC and DC input port. The upper part of the inlet is for the type 2 connector, which is used when charging at home, or at public slow and fast AC power points. Both the upper and lower parts on the input are used to hold high power during DC fast charging.

In this case, the input is a Tesla-specific CCS, meaning it can use the Supercharger and Destination charger networks. When using Superchargers, drivers need to use a tethered CCS adapter, rather than the Type 2 connector of the unit. The Model 3 will be able to charge from Tesla’s destination units in the same way as the Model S and MODEL

The Tesla Model 3’s CCS charging port is located on the near rear side, and is integrated into the front of the taillight assembly. The Model 3 can slow and fast charge from public points, depending on the network and type of charging unit. In most cases, slow charging requires a 3-pin to Type 2 cable, and fast charging requires a 3-pin to Type 2 cable, one of which is usually provided with the car. For fast charging, the vehicle uses a captive CCS connector which is part of the charging unit.

Charging on either AC or DC power requires the EV driver to plug the connectors into the correct input, and the vehicle then talks to the charging unit to ensure there is a power supply, there are no errors, and it is safe to start charging. If you charge at a home or workplace charging point, the car starts charging automatically.

In a public charger, an activation process is required to start charging. Depending on the network provider, this may require the use of an RFID card or smartphone app, often linked to a pre-set up account. Contactless pay-as-you-go units are also becoming more common in newer units. Once activated, the units will perform further communication and account verification processes before starting to charge the vehicle.
